One of the things that mindfulness is great for is changing your habits. But it doesn’t happen automatically. You don’t wake up one day and say, “I want to be mindful so I can change my habits.” Then watch as your life falls into place.
However, mindfulness can be super helpful when it comes to identifying your habits. What you have to understand about your habits is they’re automatic. They’ve become so automatic that you no longer question them or even think about them.
What’s an automatic habit? Driving a certain route to work or stopping for fast food when you’re hungry in the afternoon. You don’t remember how you arrived at work or even making the decision to pull into your favorite burger joint. You were just there.
That’s where you can use mindfulness.
Spend a day or two writing down everything you do. It might be helpful to record in fifteen or thirty minute blocks. At the end of the day, put an asterisk by any task you did automatically.
Those tasks are your habits and they can be overwritten with new ones…if you’re willing to stay present. It takes hard work and effort but it can be done!
So now I’m curious…which habits do you want to change? Hit reply on this email to share with me!
