Five Tips for Finding a Great Lawyer Who Knows Her Stuff When It Comes to Setting Up Online Businesses

Going Legit in Your Online Business

When you are ready to find a lawyer, it is essential that you find one who is familiar with the online business world. They also need to be comfortable with the type of business entity you choose.

Get Recommendations from Colleagues

The first place to go to find out who is best in your area is to ask local colleagues about it. If you have not yet met any local business owners, it’s a good idea to start going to local business meetings. Your chamber of commerce might even have subgroups for small home or internet businesses, or there may be another group you can join. Check on Meetup.com.

Consult the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory

This is a directory of lawyers who are in good standing with the bar association. You can search by name, areas of practice, law school, and location of the practice. The Martindale-Hubbell has been around since 1868 and was designed to ensure that lawyers could promote themselves but also so that people who need lawyers could find a qualified attorney.

Find a Specialist

The best way to conduct your search is to look for the type of specialist that you need. You may have to hire more than one lawyer for your business, depending on the type of business that you are starting. The law is so complicated that it’s impossible for one lawyer to know it all. Hiring specialists ensures it’s not only done right but probably faster too.

Read Online Reviews

Before you schedule anything, read some online reviews. Look at their website. Check out their social media. Find out what clubs they’re involved in, what donations they’ve made, and find out if they’re good at what they do. You can find reviews on Facebook, and you can also do a search for the name of the lawyer to find out if there is an online discussion of that lawyer.

Set Up Interviews

After you’ve done your due diligence, set up interviews with the lawyers you found. Ask them every question you have about what they will do for you and how they’ll do it. Take a list of questions with you, so you don’t forget.

Finding a great lawyer who knows their stuff will require you to take time to study the background of the recommendations you receive and to interview them before you choose. You don’t need to say yes at your first visit. In fact, you should interview them and only hire them later, when you’re sure and have checked all the references provided.
