If you’ve taken a course or read something from your competitors that you found valuable that you wanted to use with your own audience? Why not ask them if you can white label the content or license the content for your use with your audience? This ask can be very tricky, but if you already have a good relationship with them, it won’t hurt to inquire.
- White Label – This idea means that you keep the content exactly as it is, but you can add your logo to it while maintaining the integrity of the original creation. For example, if you have choreographed some exercise moves for your customers, another personal trainer might want to use the same moves with their customers.
- Private Label – If you buy private label rights content, then you know that this content is content you can rewrite and reuse as your own. But you may not realize that any type of content, written, audio, video, images, and even a process can be private labeled for someone’s use.
- Per Use Licensing – Another way to use someone else’s content or to offer your content is by licensing it per use. This is a way to do it without giving up your own rights to the content and still getting credit for it. If your competition lets you license their content, you will use it to teach something to your audience without changing the other content, and you’d acknowledge that you’re using licensed materials.
- Certification – Some business owners are reluctant to let other people use their content, but if you can present the opportunity of letting you get certified on their information, that might appeal to them. This can work for training materials really well.
You can do a lot with this type of content, such as conducting workshops, offering a course, or training. For example, if your competition has the absolute best course for list building that you want to teach to your students, you would approach the creator with your idea for licensing and how you envision it working.
Give them choices about how much control they give up over the content and assurances on how you’ll use it. Also, don’t be offended if the idea isn’t appealing to them at first. Many small business owners have not caught on to the idea that competition doesn’t have to be cutthroat. You can work together and compete in unique ways.
Likewise- You should offer your competitors the opportunity to white label or license your content once you’ve put it to use too. The truth is, having access to the right information throughout your industry is only going to be good for the audience. The audience will be more trusting if the information is based on facts and well tested.
