Everything you do for your business should start with a plan. Planning helps you determine what your goals are, what tactics you’ll use to meet those goals and helps set up deadlines and a process for success.
If you know in advance that you’re going to create pillar content that will be repurposed into other types of content it will make it much easier to create the types of content that you need to promote your business.
Starting with an eBook as the main content is a terrific way to go because that will give you a lot of information to work with. To narrow down the topic of your eBook ask yourself to name a problem that you can solve for your audience. That problem and solution will make a great topic for the eBook.
Since an eBook is a longer than an article you can go into more depth. Remember that you want to educate your audience about the problem in addition to providing them with a solution to the problem. It should be very specific and most importantly useful to your audience.
Create a Mindmap
For some people, it can help to draw out a mindmap. Put the topic of your eBook into a circle on the center of a piece of paper. Then using lines from that main topic to draw a connection to every stage or idea that comes up. You can clean it up later but this can help you form the basis for your eBook.
Think Backwards
Another way that some people like to plan out their eBook is to start at the end. For example, determine what the exact results you want the reader to experience, then work your way back toward the beginning to ensure you cover all aspects of your main point.
Develop an Outline
An outline doesn’t have to be as difficult as the one your English teacher in 10th grade taught you to make. You can simply write down the main topic, then list out each subtopic that you want to mention in the eBook in a logical order.
Study Other Books
If your topic has already been written about study other books to find out how they organize the information. Is your mindmap, list, or outline missing anything? If so you can use that information to fill in the gaps. A good way to make a consistent structure for your book is to start at the beginning and end with the main point for your audience.
Planning will ensure that it flows together well and makes the type of impact that you want it to make based on your goals. A great tip for building your first eBook is to look at the content you already have on your blog, in email messages, and even within the private label rights content that you’ve collected over the years.
